WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) renewed his call for transparency from the Chinese Communist Party and the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the origins and transmission of the coronavirus.
“We need transparency from the Chinese government. We need transparency from the World Health Organization. We’ve received neither and that is essential if we’re going to come up with vaccines as quickly as possible, better treatments, and optimize our response to this horrible pandemic,” said Senator Young.
“… I think it is very, very important that Dr. Tedros, [Director General of the World Health Organization], appear before my subcommittee and answer some very probing questions. Look, the only way we can prevent something like this from happening again is to make absolute certain we understand its origins, understand the nature of this virus, and all the circumstances surrounding this situation. We never want to encounter this damage again and the Chinese and the World Health Organiziation have been a major impediment to getting that sort of clarity” Senator Young continues.
Last month, Senator Young sent a letter to WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calling on him to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Multilateral Institutions, which Senator Young chairs. Senator Young’s subcommittee has oversight of the WHO. In addition, Senator Young has also sent a letter to the WHO requesting more information ahead of this hearing to investigate their role in helping the Chinese Communist Party cover up information regarding the threat of coronavirus.
