Donnelly and Young Urge Support for Dr. Jerome Adams to Serve as Surgeon General

Dr. Adams appeared before Senate HELP Committee

Indiana’s U.S. Senators Joe Donnelly and Todd Young meet with the nominee for Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Jerome Adams ahead of his confirmation hearing.

Washington, D.C. — Indiana’s U.S. Senators Joe Donnelly and Todd Young offer their strong support of Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams to serve as Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Adams appeared before the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee today.

The two Senators underscored their support for Dr. Adams in a letter to the Committee’s leadership. It reads in part: “As our Indiana State Health Commissioner and a highly regarded anesthesiologist, he has the experience and demonstrated leadership to promote the public health and bring awareness to some of our most pressing public health challenges as our nation’s top physician.”

They also highlighted his ability to respond to public health crises swiftly and effectively: “When the opioid epidemic led to an HIV outbreak in Scott County, just one month after Dr. Adams started as State Health Commissioner, he responded quickly, working with our local, state and federal governments, to contain the spread of the disease. His leadership has helped control infection rates and helped to put in place the necessary supports to assist and protect vulnerable Hoosiers.”

Both Senators urged the committee’s support of Dr. Adams’s nomination; a committee vote is expected Wednesday. If approved out of committee, his confirmation will move to the full Senate for a final vote.
