INDIANAPOLIS – Today, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) visited Indiana University’s (IU) Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and toured one of their breast cancer research laboratories. Senator Young met with IU Simon Cancer Center Director Dr. Patrick J. Loehrer Sr. and other IU School of Medicine and Simon Cancer Center researchers to learn more about the importance of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research investments, and their positive health and economic outcomes.
“There’s a broad recognition in Central Indiana that the IU Simon Cancer Center is doing outstanding world-class research. I wanted to understand in a more detailed way what sort of projects are ongoing and how I might be helpful moving forward in ensuring that this center has the requisite resources to continue its good work and perhaps even expand into other areas that can help save lives and ensure Hoosiers have access to outstanding medical care,” said Senator Young. “I am grateful to IU for hosting me today, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I commend the tremendous work being done here.”
“As one of the nation’s elite NCI-designated cancer centers, we rely heavily on funding from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies to conduct the most advanced and promising cancer research,” said Dr. Patrick J. Loehrer Sr., director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. “We are grateful to Senator Young for his tremendous support of this research and for taking the time to visit, learn about our work, and explore how we can continue to impact cancer care not only for citizens of Indiana, but also patients globally.”
