Senators Young and Donnelly Introduce National Ernie Pyle Day Resolution
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) introduced a resolution this week to designate August 3, 2018, as National Ernie Pyle Day, in remembrance of the celebrated war correspondent and Hoosier journalist.
“Ernie Pyle’s renowned career reporting throughout Indiana and World War II demonstrates the work ethic of Hoosiers and the dedication of Americans in commemorating our soldiers,” said Senator Young. “By designating National Ernie Pyle Day, his important contributions to our state and nation will be honored.”
“I am proud to join Senator Young to introduce legislation designating August 3, 2018 as ‘National Ernie Pyle Day,’” said Senator Donnelly. “Ernie Pyle—a Hoosier native from Dana, Indiana —forever influenced American journalism. His reporting from the battlefield in World War II captured the daily sacrifice and heroism of our servicemembers fighting in the war.”
After studying journalism at Indiana University, Ernie Pyle, served as a beloved correspondent in Indiana and later overseas during World War II. Beginning his career at La Porte’s The Daily Herald, Mr. Pyle would go on to receive the Pulitzer Prize for his distinguished reporting of WWII in 1944. During his tenure as a war correspondent, he worked alongside our soldiers in the field to produce work that properly commemorated a soldier’s courage and sacrifice.
