Every Hoosier deserves a fair shot to succeed. Regardless of your age or where you live, where you go to school or what challenges and opportunities you face – you deserve a fair shot. My Fair Shot Agenda aims to identify the barriers to success and the actions we can take to ensure a level playing field.
Success can mean different things to different people – it can mean getting a good job, or learning technical skills through an apprenticeship program. It can mean obtaining an affordable education, or living in a safe and healthy community. For some, it can mean getting treatment for addiction, or finding a loving home through improved adoption and foster care programs. There are many ways to measure success, and I want to hear from Hoosiers what success means to them.
The Fair Shot Agenda focuses on four key areas:
Opportunity
How do we improve opportunities for upward mobility, a quality education, and a good-paying job?
We know we must expand apprenticeship programs and career and technical training, develop innovative solutions for funding higher education, like Income Share Agreements, and improve access to affordable housing, so that people can live where the jobs are.
What are your ideas?
Safety
How do we ensure the safety of Indiana communities and protect our national security interests?
We can begin by ensuring our law enforcement officers have the tools they need to keep us safe. Legislation I introduced, the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act, ensures the brave men and women who protect our communities have greater access to mental health services when they need them.
What else can we do?
Health
How do we create strong and healthy families?
Improving healthcare access, combatting the opioid epidemic, and strengthening adoption and foster care programs are a few places to start. This includes expanding treatment options for those suffering from addiction, healing babies born into addiction, and creating a pathway out of the criminal justice system and into recovery.
Better Government
How do we create smarter and more efficient government?
Let’s expand public-private partnerships through programs like social impact partnerships, eliminate job-killing red tape, remove bureaucratic hurdles for veterans, and reduce government waste across the federal government.
Where do you think we should start?
What other steps should we take?
As we develop the Fair Shot Agenda and determine what policy and legislative actions can help create a fair shot at success – I want to hear from all Hoosiers. I recently launched my Fair Shot Agenda with roundtables in Indianapolis, Hammond, and Fort Wayne, and I look forward to continuing this ongoing conversation.
